Belfry on the Rožnav Calvary

Rožňavská calvary is one of the oldest in Slovakia and at the same time the oldest monument of its kind in the Gemer region. It is situated on the southern slope of a hill historically called Szölömál, on which, as the name in the translation from Hungarian reveals, grapes were once grown.

It was built in 1741 by Jakub Steer, a burgher of Rožnav. The building, originally with seven stops - chapels, grew in the 19th century to fourteen stops with colorful majolica reliefs.

The bell tower is a separate object of the calvary area and consists of a brick and wooden part.

The walk to Calvary is easy. It is less than two kilometers from the city hall on Náměstí baník, during which you will overcome 120 meters in height. After about one and a half kilometers, you will find yourself in the parking lot under the observatory, where there is a rest area, as well as an info panel, where visitors can read interesting information about the calvary, from its inception to the present day, in Slovak, Hungarian and English.

The Calvary trail itself is illuminated at night with soft light that is not distracting. From its highest point, there is a wonderful view of the city, the canyon of the Slaná river and the plain of the Slovak Karst.
