Castles and manors
As a historical region, Gemer was lined on majestic hills with many castles and forts, monasteries and chateaux, many of which have already disappeared. Remains of castles and forts in the form of ramparts can still be observed in nature. We can read about their stories especially in connection with the war of the Brothers with the Huňady family in the 15th century. This was the century of glory of Gemer Castles, when during the siege many of them ended up in ruins and were destroyed. Those who avoided destruction faced another difficult fate during the Ottoman threat and uprisings. Despite the harsh historical moments, we have the opportunity to admire several buildings that have been saved or brought back to life. However, many Gemer secrets remain underground and await their discoverers.
