Evangelical church in Rimavské Brezovo
As the year of construction, an unrealistic date of 1047 is given on an older plaque. This two-nave building with a rectangular end of the presbytery and an imagined tower dates from the third third of the 13th century. During the 14th century, the presbytery was covered with a cross vault and supplemented with frescoes by the author or authors from the workshop of the Master of the Ochtiná Presbytery.
Among others, you can see scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, images of Christ in the mandorla, the four evangelists, or the blessing angel and St. Bartholomew carrying his own skin on his shoulder. In the center above the arch there is a painting of God, in the lower part of the triumphal arch there is a painting of Metercia, St. Anne and the Virgin Mary with the baby Jesus, on the north wall of the nave Christ carrying the cross and the scene of the Crucifixion. The inconsistent dating of the paintings places their origin in the 60s to 80s of the 14th century, but also around 1420.
The original medieval stone pavement was uncovered in the presbytery, and a stone baptistery with a polygonal pile from the 14th century was also preserved.
Originally the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is now Evangelical. It has been in its current form since 1893, when the nave of the church was expanded and its orientation changed. The original presbytery thus became a side nave. At the same time, the frescoes were restored. In the years 2005-2012, a comprehensive restoration of the original presbytery was carried out, which was awarded the main prize in the Cultural Monument of the Year 2012 competition. In 2014, research in the medieval ship brought new discoveries of wall paintings. In 2019, the total restoration of the medieval part of the church was completed.
