Jesenské village
Jesenské (German: Feled) is a village located in the southwestern part of Rimava river basin, 10 km south of Rimavská Sobota vity. With a population of 2,249, it is the largest village and the most important railway junction of southern Gemer.
The first written mention is from 1274, where the village is mentioned under the name Feled. The name changed gradually until 1948, when it was changed to Jesenské, after the Slovak poet and writer Janko Jesenský. The name of the village Feled is still used in the Hungarian language.
The cadastre of the village covers one third of the NATURA 2000 bird protected area and borders the Cerová vrchovina mountain range in the south-western part.
From a tourist point of view, the surroundings of the village are particularly interesting for the remains of the nearby manor house and castle in Širkovce, and military bunker (so-called ROPík) which in recent years have been gradually restored and installed by a group of enthusiasts. You will find it between the main road and the railway behind the village of Jesenské - in the direction of Hodejov, approx. 500 m from the railway station in Jesenské..
