Serényi's cistern

Serényi's cistern, the only one of its kind in Slovakia and Central Europe. Unique on the Plešivecká plain

Gemer is full of unique technical works and one of them is Serényi's cistern, a unique technical work located on the Plešivecká plain.

Since the meadows of the Plešivecká Plain were used for cattle grazing in the past and there was a shortage of water, a special cistern was built here in 1913 to collect rainwater.

Serényi's cistern consists of a concrete tank, which is located in a place where rainwater from the surrounding slopes is collected from a large area. The cistern has respectable dimensions - 16 in diameter and 4 meters deep. It was able to hold 960,000 liters of water and water several hundred cattle, horses and sheep

The tank survived Austria-Hungary, the creation of Czechoslovakia, both world wars, and the post-war totalitarian regime.
