Slovak kras National Park

The largest karst area of the plateau type in Central Europe hides more than 1,300 abysses and caves. These were inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List in 1995, together with the caves of the neighboring Aggtel kras in Hungary.

The most interesting tourist places in the Gemer part of the national park are the Domica Caves, the Gombasecká Cave, the Krásnohorská Cave and the lowest ice cave in the Silická ľadnica temperate zone.

The Slovak kras is characterized by plateaus with many scrap fields and ditches. From the valley, the plains can be seen with steep rocky edges. They are drained by a number of springs.

The territory of the Slovak kras, which was declared a national park in 2002, is characterized by high biodiversity with a number of protected species of plants and animals. Common species of animals here include lynx, wild boar, wolf, fox and badger.

Since 1977, the Slovak kras has also been a biosphere reserve within the UNESCO program "Man and the Biosphere".
