The first Slovak Gymnasium in Revúca
The first Slovak Gymnasium opened its doors on September 16, 1862. It became the first high school in Hungary where classes were taught in the Slovak language. Because of this, its activity was ensured only by the contributions of the founders, supporters and benefactors of the gymnasium. During its twelve-year duration, many important figures of literature, history and religion worked in it, such as Ján Francisci, August Horislav Škultéty, Matej Nandrassy, and Samuel Ormis, a native of Revúca. Ivan Branislav Zoch, a pioneer in the teaching of physical education in Hungary at the time and the author of the first Slovak physics textbook for grammar schools, was a prominent figure in the faculty. In 1868, the first matriculation exams in the Slovak language were held here. In 1874, the Hungarian government forcibly closed it.
Today, the building of the first Slovak Gymnasium houses a beautiful museum that offers insights into the past of teaching at this important secondary school. In addition to the exhibition, you can learn more about the city and its surroundings in the tourist information center, or enjoy excellent coffee in a small cafehouse.
