Tomášov vrch lookout tower
Above the village of Tachty in the south of the Rimavská Sobota district, stands an 11-meter-high lookout tower.
It provides a nice view of the entire area, the Cerová vrchovina mountain range, the nearby water reservoir and Hungary, which is only a kilometer away. It is interesting that from this southernmost tip of the region, in good weather, you can see Kráľova hola, which is 80 kilometers away.
The surroundings of the lookout point are suitable for relaxing and walking by the nearby water reservoir, or for easy bike tours in the flat valley of the Gortva river, which rises above the village of Tachty. At the nearby road border crossing to Hungary, hikers are offered a green-marked tourist route that will take you partly through the territory of Hungary, but mostly following the state border, after a 19-kilometer journey through the Cerová vrchovina to Šomoška Castle.
In the wider area, the Ragáč mountain, the second youngest volcano in Slovakia, is worth climbing for more than an hour. Paganský hrad hill is also unique, hiding the remains of the stone rampart of the ancient Celts, the remains of a Slavic fort, and also a rock town with over 30 pseudokarst caves that were once inhabited by our prehistoric ancestors. But if you don´t have time for longer hiking, we recommend a short climb to the opposite Hajnáčka castle hill. An educational trail with information panels will take you to this landmark of the village in a few minutes.
Fishermen, as well as visitors looking for relaxation, will find their way in the quiet coves of the Petrovce water reservoir near Gemerský Jablonec, which is also a nesting place and stopover for migrating waterfowl. In its vicinity is the Beležír protected area, declared for the purpose of protecting the ground squirrel. A few kilometers further on, there is a magical narrow valley with a preserved marsh biotope and today very rare elements of fauna and flora - the Fenek protected area. You can get to it by following the yellow marked tourist route from the village of Petrovce.
The lookouttower on Tomášo vrch hill was created from the local government´s own funds, as part of the development of tourism in the Medveš microregion. It was built with the help of home craftsmen and activation workers. Excavation work began on April 22, 2016, on Earth Day, and the lookout tower was finished approximately one and a half months later. The observant eye of the tourist will not miss the similarity of the tower with lookout point at Slopovo, which has the same designer and contractor.
