Veľké Teriakovce village
North of Rimavská Sobota in the valley of the Rimava river you will find the village of Veľké Teriakovce. It also includes the local parts of Malé Teriakovce, Vrbovce and Krásna.
As the guardian of the entire region, the legendary Maginhrad hill rises above the village. In the distant past, there was a wooden rampart serving as a Hussite fortress.
No historical record has been preserved about him, but we know him from myths and legends, and the Slovak romantic poet Ján Botto (Janko Maginhradský) also mentions him in his works.
Today, there is a 17 m high lookout tower at the top, offering wonderful views of the surroundings, from Kráľova hoľa (1948m a.s.l.) through the Rimavská valley to Hungary. Four marked tourist routes lead to it: from Veľké Teriakovce, Nižný Skálnik, Horné Zahorany and Vyšná Pokoradz.
You can also go to it from Vyšné Skálnik, along the educational trail In the Footsteps of Maginhrad. Each of its stops will tell you a few verses from the poem of Maginhrad. After completing the route, you will learn the whole reputation. The magical atmosphere is completed by the ubiquitous fairy-tale statues of knights, shepherds, giants, but also mysterious sandstone mines.
The Gothic church in the local part of Malé Teriakovce also testifies to the rich history of the village. It boasts a painted wooden coffered ceiling, which is one of the oldest preserved in Slovakia.
Here you will also find a beautifully renovated building of over 200 years old water mill, which is today declared a national cultural monument. It serves as a regional museum of farming, milling, baking and traditional crafts. A unique collection of Kyjatice toys, a traditional Teriakovce room and kitchen, and educational spaces await you here.
The mill is accessible and comes to life especially during the summer season through various events, creative workshops and exhibitions.
A traditional event in Veľké Teriakovce is Slovak mitering. It takes place at the end of October and is mainly dedicated to the work of shepherds. Demonstrations of farm work, mutton specialties, a craft and farmer´s fair and a rich folklore program are prepared for visitors.
Accommodation in the village is offered by the family Penzión Salaš pod Maginhradom, inspired by the traditional style of Bača - shepherd of sheep. Body and soul will be delighted by its elaborate regional cuisine with mountain specialties in a popular hut.
